FIU made the move to "big boy" football, Division 1-A, in 2005. FIU started off 5-6 in their first year but from 2006 to 2007 they endured a losing streak that stretched for 23 painful games. In 2010 they posted their first winning record in Division 1-A, aka FBS, by beating Toledo 34-32 in the Little Casears Bowl and securing a 7-6 season. Andres of FIUGoldenPanthers.com helped us out with our Pre-Season Preview on FIU and he once again stepped up to the plate to answer some questions about the Golden Panthers 2010 Season.
1. FIU went from a team with a 23 game losing streak to winning their first bowl game. What did this season and the bowl win mean for the team/university?
This season meant a great deal in helping the future development of the football program and justifying the investment that the University has made in this young football program. Prior to this, FIU was known as the other team in the brawl with the University of Miami and, as you mentioned, the team with the 23 game losing streak. Going into its 10th year playing football, the FIU program can build on some concrete on the field success with its first winning season in history, its first conference championship, its first Bowl appearance and its first win in a Bowl game. The stage is set for this improvement as FIU is expected to return 15 starters from this year’s team. In addition FIU’s schedule for the upcoming 4 seasons features at least 6 home games, including home and home with Texas A&M, Louisville, Duke, UCF and Akron, along with our usual Sun Belt Conference matchups. Lastly, Coach Cristobal has always been known as an excellent recruiter (by SBC standards) and this is just another weapon to have in his arsenal as he recruits against the big boys. Coach Cristobal has already stated that the Bowl game has had a very positive effect on the quality of athletes interested in joining the FIU football program.
2. Which players were the biggest surprise of the season?
By far, the biggest surprise of the season was the marked improvement of the offensive line. In 2009, this team was ranked 100 in total offense and 107 in rushing offense. Contrast that with 2010 when the team was 46 in total offense and 27 in rushing offense. The improvement in the rushing attack helped take some of the pressure off from Junior QB Wesley Carroll who cut down on mistakes in the 2nd half of the season, in addition, it helped keep the defense fresh throughout 4 quarters.
3. What game was the turning point of the season?
FIU’s 42-35 double overtime victory over ULM was the turning point in the season. FIU had just come off a devastating loss to FAU dropping its record to 2 – 5 and in danger of falling out of the SBC championship race. The Golden Panthers led most of the game but allowed ULM to tie the game in the fourth quarter and the FIU defense was forced to create a turnover in field goal range at the end of the game to send it to overtime. Led by TY Hilton’s 25 yard TD run, FIU was able to stop ULM in the 2nd OT and pick up the 42-35 win. FIU went on to win its next 3 games, including a 52-35 victory over defending SBC champions, Troy.
Which players are you most excited about for next season?
TY Hilton is still exploring his draft possibilities, but if he returns, he will once again be the most exciting and explosive part of the FIU football team. TY was back to form in 2010 after an injury plagued 2009. TY was named the 2010 SBC Player of the Year and would be a leading candidate to repeat as such if he were to return. Most of the country might have gotten to see TY for the first time after his miraculous hook and ladder, but FIU fans have known for 3 years what a great player TY is.
5. In what areas does the team need to improve the most this off-season to keep it's momentum moving forward?
The Panthers defense, while significantly improved from 2009 when it was ranked #119 in total defense (60th in 2010), will have to deal with the loss of 2 of its leaders in Seniors Anthony Gaitor (CB) and Toronto Smith (LB). In order to maintain the momentum, the defense needs to replace those two key cogs. However, the parts might be there already with safety Jonathan Cyprien and a slew of talented linebackers waiting in the wings. If the FIU defense can become a top 40 unit and if Wesley Carroll continues to take care of the ball as he did in the last few games of the season (and TY Hilton stays), then I believe that the Golden Panthers can build on this season’s success and become a perennial SBC title contender.

UL once again schedules some tough out of conference opponents this year (last year they played LSU and Nebraska) as they face off against Georgia in week one, Okie State in week five and Ole Miss in November. In order to find out more information about UL we talked with BJ Thompson, the publisher of Scout.com's Cajun Red Zone.
What are the major strengths and biggest weaknesses of the Ragin' Cajuns?
Strengths- (Offense) - Cajuns return QB Chris Masson after throwing for 2,500 yards in his first year as a starter. Solid core of receivers in TE/WR Ladarius Green, WR Javon Lawson, WR Rico Joseph, WR Richie Falgout, WR Marlin Miller and WR Pierre Hill.
Strengths - (Defense) – Cajuns return all four starters in the secondary- (CB’s Orkeys Auriene, Dwight Bentley- Safeties Maurice Rolle, and Lance Kelley) Solid LB core return in (MLB Grant Fleming, SLB Daylon McCoy and WLB Devin-Lewis Buchanan).
Weakness- (Offense) – Cajuns return only two starters on the offensive line and the running game must find some consistency after struggling with injuries last season.
Weakness- (Defense) – Defensive line struggled to put pressure on opposing QB’s and stopping the running game up the middle of the defense.
Louisiana starts off with a bang in their first game against the Georgia Bulldogs. What do you hope to learn from that game and what would you view as a successful outing against the dawgs?
The Cajuns will be facing a very physical SEC team in UGA; the play of the Cajun’s offensive and defensive lines in the game will be interesting to watch. Both groups will face very physical units from the bulldogs. Can the Cajuns play physical enough to keep the game within reach as they did against LSU and K-State last season? If they do, this will give both units confidence going into their conference schedule the following two weeks.
What team on the schedule do you want to beat the most?
That’s simple, the two teams picked at the top of the SBC, Middle Tennessee and Troy. If the Cajuns beat one of those two teams, they will be in the hunt for a bowl game.
Who do you consider your top rivals?
Well conference has tried to push an in-state rivalry between Louisiana and ULM, but the games have been poorly attended, especially in Monroe. The Cajuns share some history with North Texas and Arkansas State in the Big West Conference, so they would be at the top of the list along with ULM.
Who is the best player on your team that nobody talks about?
MLB Grant Fleming has been one of the most consistent defensive playmakers in the SBC when he has not been injured. Fleming placed second on team in total tackles and eighth overall in the conference 2009 while making 68 tackles over the final eight games (8.5 tackles-per-game). Fleming accomplished this while recovering from an ACL surgery in 2008. Fleming was not nominated for SBC preseason all conference teams.
Who is the best offensive player on the team?
TE- Ladarius Green- the “6-6”, 230-pound Green is a mismatch for any secondary attempting to cover him man-to-man. The Cajuns use Green as a TE in many of their formations to create match-up problems for defenses, but he will play WR in the NFL. I spoke to two NFL scouts last year, both compared Green to the NO-Saints Marquis Colston. Green, who possesses 4.47 speed, could not be covered by LSU’s Chad Jones or Nebraska’s safeties.
Who is the most impactful defensive player on the team?
Senior LB Daylon McCoy Started the first nine games of the season at linebacker before missing the rest of the season with a knee injury...Placed fifth on the team in tackles despite missing three games...Was third on the team in tackles-for-loss...Had at least five tackles in six of the first eight games of the season...Established a new career-high with 13 tackles at FIU, also added a sack and forced a fumble that led to a touchdown...Led the team with three quarterback hurries.
What player(s) needs to step up this year in order for the team to reach its full capability?
Offense- Cajuns need the three incoming recruits at running back (Walker, Streeter and Spikes) to produce this season.
Defense- The Cajuns need an immediate impact from the JC DL recruits, (Bernard Smith, Benay Pryer and Chris Tucker).
Who is the top offensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
Fr. RB- Robert Walker- rushed for 2,041 yards and scored 27 touchdowns during his senior season in high school.
Who is the top defensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
Jr. JC transfer DE/OLB Bernard Smith- The former Virginia Tech signee brings the kind of speed the Cajun defense needs off the edge.
Gut feeling on the team’s final record at the end of the regular season and what makes this a successful season in your eyes?
The Cajuns will need to finish 6-2 in the SBC or better to have a shot at a bowl game. With OC games against Ole Miss, Oklahoma St., UGA and Ohio, the Cajuns will have a tough row to haul. The Cajuns must win six games in the SBC and defeat Ohio on the road to have a chance at a 7-5 season, and a bowl game.

FIU gave up almost 500 yards of total offense to their opponents last year and played an out-of-conference schedule that included Florida and Alabama. This year they have another tough OOC schedule as they face off against Rutgers, Texas A&M, Maryland, and Pittsburgh. What are the major strengths and biggest weaknesses of the team?
Strengths: FIU has a great group of wide receivers, let by TY Hilton. TY was named a Freshman All American 2 years ago and was hindered by some injuries in 2009. Despite being limited by nagging injuries, led the team with 57 catches, 632 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions. In addition to TY, the team can also count on returning Juniors, Greg Ellingson who was second on the team with 34 receptions, 528 receiving yards and four receiving touchdown and led the team in yards per reception with 15.5. However, relying on freshmen and JC transfers trying to learn a new system is a cause for concern once again for FIU's DL. On the other side of the ball, the FIU Offensive Line has been just as bad in its inability to protect the quarterback and create running lanes for FIU's running backs. Again, FIU tried to address this through recruiting both high school and junior college route. FIU does have a lot of experience returning on the OL but that might not mean much for a group that struggled in 2009.
Looking at the schedule who will be the first major test?
If FIU is to show improvement from last year, it will have to start off with a major test at Home against Rutgers. Last year FIU played a valiant game at Rutgers, losing 23-15 in New Jersey. This year, the Golden Panthers hope to start a season with its first win against a BCS Automatic Qualifier. FIU does get the benefit of being at home and being the first game of the year ensures that the Panthers will have a strong crowd behind them. If FIU can put up a good showing against Rutgers, it could set the tone for the rest of the season.
What team on the schedule do you fear the most?
Pitt is the 4th straight game against a BCS AQ conference member to start the season, and could arguably be the toughest of the 4. At this point, the FIU team could be once again looking at an 0-4 start and Pitt might just be the nail that sends the young Golden Panthers on another tailspin year. However, if FIU can manage to remain injury free through this game, the schedule certainly becomes more favorable with all conference games and 5 of the next 8 games in Florida.
Who is the best player on your team that nobody talks about?
Coaches are really high on Jeremiah Harden, RB, a transfer from Syracuse. If Harden can get average running protection from the line, then he might be able to give the Panthers another weapon to complement its excellent receiving corps. In addition, it will keep the FIU defense on the sidelines protecting the DL and LB's from the wear and tear of bigger teams.
Who is the best offensive player on the team?
TY Hilton (see above). Not only a standout receiver but can also burn you kick and punt returns.
Who is the most impactful defensive player on the team?

What player(s) needs to step up this year in order for the team to reach it's full capability?
FIU needs its QB to develop. Coming into the season, everyone expected Ole Miss transfer Wesley Carrol, 2007 All SEC Freshmen team, to waltz into the starting job, however, the Panthers have yet to name a starting QB and there is talk that RSR Wayne Younger might still win the job. Panther faithful are nervous as Wayne has never won a game he has started and has been very inconsistent. The QB needs to be able to give the developing OL a capable leader who gets rid of the ball quickly and accurately in order for the offense's weapons on the outside to be fully utilized.
Who is the top offensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
FIU features a new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. For that reason, I believe they both need to be the top offensive and defensive newcomers. OC Scott Satterfield joins FIU from the University of Toledo where he served as Passing Coordinator/QB Coach. At UT, Satterfield was able to bring out the best in Sr. QB Opelt and the Panthers are hoping he is able to similarly develop FIU's Wesley Carroll/Wayne Younger. In addition, the Panthers hope that he can better utilize the receiving weapons that he inherits as well as develop a consistent running game in 2010.
Who is the top defensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
New Defensive Coordinator Geoff Collins joins FIU from Central Florida where he served as LB Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. DC Collins is hoping to simplify the defensive scheme to allow the quick LB's corps and the strong secondary to try and make up for the smallish defensive linemen. If Coach Collins can infuse his high energy scheme quickly and if FIU's offense can help keep the defense off the field, then FIU's defense might surprise some people.
Gut feeling on the teams final record at the end of the regular season and what makes this a successful season in your eyes?
HC Mario Cristobal comes into his 4th season under greater pressure to perform. After a 1-11, 5-7 and 3-9 seasons, I believe anything less than 5 - 7/6 - 6 would be a major disappointment. However, anything more than that might be too much to ask for. FIU has recruited extremely well for an SBC team, and the hope is that the talent will at some point help overcome some of the inexperience. This still remains a young team, but that excuse might be running out for Coach Cristobal.
My prediction: 5 - 7
Successful: 7 - 5 and FIU gets to its first Bowl Game.

This year they have another tough OOC schedule as they face off against Rutgers, Texas A&M, Maryland, and Pittsburgh. What are the major strengths and biggest weaknesses of the team?
Strengths: FIU has a great group of wide receivers, let by TY Hilton. TY was named a Freshman All American 2 years ago and was hindered by some injuries in 2009. Despite being limited by nagging injuries, led the team with 57 catches, 632 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions. In addition to TY, the team can also count on returning Juniors, Greg Ellingson who was second on the team with 34 receptions, 528 receiving yards and four receiving touchdown and led the team in yards per reception with 15.5. Last year North Texas's turnover margin was worse than all but 3 teams (UGA, Tulane and Miami of Ohio). In addition there were only 8 teams that gave up more points than North Texas. North Texas had a middle-of-the-pack Sun Belt offense but when you are getting killed on turnovers it's going to translate negatively on the scoreboard. The only wins Todd Dodge managed last year were against Ball State in the opener and against Western Kentucky. North Texas lost a total of 5 games by 5 or less points so they are in the ballpark they just aren't connecting with the curve ball. One has to wonder how much longer Todd Dodge will be the coach if he can't turn those close games around. Some good news is that, along with Western Kentucky, North Texas returns the most starters in the Sun Belt. We reached out to Brett Vito of the Mean Green Blog of the Denton-Record Chronicle to find out more information about North Texas.
What are the major strengths of the team?
Lance Dunbar is one of the best running backs at a non-AQ school one is going to find, and he will be running behind an experienced offensive line this season. UNT ran the ball well last season and should be good again this year.
Looking at the schedule who will be the first major test and why?
UNT opens at Clemson. It doesn’t get much tougher than that. I would say the first key game will be Rice in the second week of the season. That is a game UNT needs to win, and the Mean Green will actually have a shot.
What team on the schedule do you fear the most?
I’m not playing, but for UNT, that game against Clemson could be a bit scary. There is a chance it could get out of hand. And more importantly, there is always a chance that UNT could lose a few key players before the games that it needs to win come up on the schedule.
Who is the best player on your team that nobody talks about?
I don’t think people give Esteban Santiago enough credit. He has been a rock at right tackle for years.
Who is the best offensive player on the team?
Lance Dunbar, without a doubt.
Who is the most impactful defensive player on the team?
I would say Craig Robertson. He is a senior linebacker who has been about as consistent a player as one could ask for in the college game. He is out there every game and produces. UNT has been terrible defensively the last several years. I hate to imagine what that defense would look like without him.
What player(s) needs to step up this year in order for the team to reach it's full capability?
UNT needs either Nathan Tune or Derek Thompson to play well while taking over at quarterback. UNT has had a revolving door at quarterback ever since Scott Hall graduated in 2004. Tune has started a couple of games last year, while Thompson played just one series. If Tune starts, he will be the sixth starting quarterback in six seasons. If UNT goes with Thompson, he will be the seventh starter in six seasons.
Who is the top offensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
It’s tough to say, but my guess is Jamize Olawale, a tight end out of the California JC ranks. UNT has a new offensive coordinator who plans on using the tight end more and Olawale seems like the type of guy who could emerge.
Who is the top defensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
UNT desperately needs help at defensive end, especially now that Eddrick Gilmore has graduated. UNT signed Mike Miller to play the strong side. He had better be what they expect him to be, because I don’t see a whole lot of other options.
Gut feeling on the teams final record at the end of the regular season and what makes this a successful season in your eyes?
I am picking UNT to go 4-8. That record would double last season’s win total. I have a hard time seeing UNT beating Clemson, Kansas State, Troy or Middle Tennessee. That leaves eight games. UNT will win some of those games, but hasn’t put together back-to-back wins since 2004. UNT could get on a roll, but with a new quarterback and a defense that still has to put it together, I have a hard time seeing the team getting on the kind of roll that would lead to a .500 season.

The only wins Todd Dodge managed last year were against Ball State in the opener and against Western Kentucky. North Texas lost a total of 5 games by 5 or less points so they are in the ballpark they just aren't connecting with the curve ball. One has to wonder how much longer Todd Dodge will be the coach if he can't turn those close games around. Some good news is that, along with Western Kentucky, North Texas returns the most starters in the Sun Belt. We reached out to Brett Vito of the Mean Green Blog of the Denton-Record Chronicle to find out more information about North Texas.
What are the major strengths of the team?
Lance Dunbar is one of the best running backs at a non-AQ school one is going to find, and he will be running behind an experienced offensive line this season. UNT ran the ball well last season and should be good again this year.
Looking at the schedule who will be the first major test and why?
UNT opens at Clemson. It doesn’t get much tougher than that. I would say the first key game will be Rice in the second week of the season. That is a game UNT needs to win, and the Mean Green will actually have a shot.
What team on the schedule do you fear the most?
I’m not playing, but for UNT, that game against Clemson could be a bit scary. There is a chance it could get out of hand. And more importantly, there is always a chance that UNT could lose a few key players before the games that it needs to win come up on the schedule.
Who is the best player on your team that nobody talks about?
I don’t think people give Esteban Santiago enough credit. He has been a rock at right tackle for years.
Who is the best offensive player on the team?
Lance Dunbar, without a doubt.
Who is the most impactful defensive player on the team?
I would say Craig Robertson. He is a senior linebacker who has been about as consistent a player as one could ask for in the college game. He is out there every game and produces. UNT has been terrible defensively the last several years. I hate to imagine what that defense would look like without him.
What player(s) needs to step up this year in order for the team to reach it's full capability?
UNT needs either Nathan Tune or Derek Thompson to play well while taking over at quarterback. UNT has had a revolving door at quarterback ever since Scott Hall graduated in 2004. Tune has started a couple of games last year, while Thompson played just one series. If Tune starts, he will be the sixth starting quarterback in six seasons. If UNT goes with Thompson, he will be the seventh starter in six seasons.
Who is the top offensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
It’s tough to say, but my guess is Jamize Olawale, a tight end out of the California JC ranks. UNT has a new offensive coordinator who plans on using the tight end more and Olawale seems like the type of guy who could emerge.
Who is the top defensive newcomer that can make an impact this year?
UNT desperately needs help at defensive end, especially now that Eddrick Gilmore has graduated. UNT signed Mike Miller to play the strong side. He had better be what they expect him to be, because I don’t see a whole lot of other options.
Gut feeling on the teams final record at the end of the regular season and what makes this a successful season in your eyes?
I am picking UNT to go 4-8. That record would double last season’s win total. I have a hard time seeing UNT beating Clemson, Kansas State, Troy or Middle Tennessee. That leaves eight games. UNT will win some of those games, but hasn’t put together back-to-back wins since 2004. UNT could get on a roll, but with a new quarterback and a defense that still has to put it together, I have a hard time seeing the team getting on the kind of roll that would lead to a .500 season.

Troy won the Sun Belt Conference last year by going undefeated in conference play. They didn't have as much success outside of the conference where they dropped 4 of the 5 games they played against non-conference foes (including the bowl loss to Central Michigan). They put up some big time stats on offense last year but must replace their starting QB this year. Their defense was middle of the pack statistically in the Sun Belt and they must replace a lot of key cogs on that side of the football. What are the major strengths and biggest weaknesses of the team?
Major Strengths: Coaching staff. We’ve had some great continuity among the coaching staff with some changes that have worked to our advantage. We lost OC Tony Franklin to Auburn and we get OC Neal Brown. We set most major offensive records with him as our OC. We lose Brown to Texas Tech. Now with new OC Kenny Edenfield, we expect to continue to do well on the offense.
Biggest Weaknesses: Injuries and ineligibilities. Haha, we were hit hard (specifically in the defensive backfield) with injuries and academic ineligibles. Our top DB gets ineligible for grades yet he still gets drafted!

Looking at the schedule who will be the first major test and why?
We have to make a statement from the very first game (Bowling Green). Last year we thought we’d roll into Ohio and clean their clocks. They had other plans. We need to show that we can beat other ‘mid-majors’ first and foremost. After that, we go to Oklahoma State who we beat up in ’08 but they returned the favor in ’09. The rubber match will be a good notch on our belt….if we can win.
What team on the schedule do you fear the most?
Since I absolutely cannot stand Univ of Alabama’s kid brother Birmingham, I would fear them, cause if we lose, well, I can’t even fathom it. As for who I fear because the should be good and should destroy us…the only one I can come up with Univ of South Carolina because they are in the SEC.
Who is the best player on your team that nobody talks about?
Because he’s a lineman, it would be James Brown (left tackle) in my opinion. This kid came in replacing a long time starter and improved on the position. He’s big (6’4”, 346lb) and can move. No one will talk about him because he’s not a QB or receiver, but this kid makes the team better. A lot better!
Who is the best offensive player on the team?
Easy question. Jerrel “I do it all” Jernigan. A multi-time all conference selection, JJ has made an impact on the Trojan squad in several positions. He’s primarily a receiver, but his punt/kick return skills are highly rewarding and he even lines up at QB from time to time. While on the short side for the NFL (5’9”) we are hopeful he’s our next offensive draftee.
Who is the most impactful defensive player on the team?
Man, we lost some great defensive players this year. From our Killer B’s Linebacker duo (Bear Woods-Falcons and Boris Lee-Chargers) to our great defensive ends (Cam Sheffield-Chiefs and Brandon Lang-Chargers) we’ve got a lot of replacing to do. One young bright spot from last year was freshman All-American defensive back Bryan Willis. This kid started all 13 games, 4 INT, and returned an onside kick for a TD. He’s super athletic and will have to be an automatic leader for not only our defensive backfield, but for our entire defense.
What player(s) needs to step up this year in order for the team to reach it's full capability?
There are a lot of candidates here. If you polled the Trojan Nation, you would hear names like Jamie Hampton (possible starting QB), Donnell Golden (possible starting LB) or even Josh Jarboe (possible starting WR). But I’m going to go with someone who is listed as a 3rd teamer after spring. LSU transfer Sidell Corley. This 6’4” 274lb defensive lineman came to TROY out of shape and never really made a huge impact last year (didn’t need to with our starters and second stringers). This year, however, he has to step up and move up. Not only does he have to start for us, he has to be the next big thing for us on the defensive line.
Gut feeling on the teams final record at the end of the regular season and what makes this a successful season in your eyes?
Gut feeling, huh? Sheesh, no pressure to be anyone’s message board fodder! I truly want to say 10-2, but since we are replacing a TON of talent off of last year’s team, I’ll go with 9-3 or 8-4. This does not count a bowl game, which I do think we’ll make again.
